Design Review

The Belleville Historic Preservation Commission is responsible for identifying and creating an inventory of those areas, places, buildings, structures, works of art and other objects that have special historical, cultural, community or aesthetic interest or value. Once these have been identified, the Commission is responsible for insuring their preservation and continued utilization.

The design review process is the primary mechanism by which the Commission carries out its responsibility to preserve our history. Property owners should obtain a design review before any changes are made to the exterior of any property located in one of Belleville’s local historic districts. The City requires an approved Design Review Request before it will issue a building permit for such properties.

Design decisions are an important factor in maintaining a historic and architecturally significant area, which in turn drives economic development and prosperity for our community. Successful historic preservation requires all involved to work together to understand and balance competing interests.

Design Review Request forms and the Design Guideline Manual can be found here. Contact the Commission with questions or for guidance.
